The Light in Our Darkness

Honoring God's Word

As we start today's reflection, we remain standing in honor of the Word of the Lord. Our primary reading is drawn from John 9:35-41, words that are crucial to our faith. Jesus, upon hearing the outcast man's plight, asked him, Do you believe in the Son of Man? The man, once blind, responds with awe and belief. This passage underscores the transformative power of recognizing Jesus as the light in our lives.

The Reality of Darkness

Imagine moving through your home at night without turning on the lights—an act of faith and familiarity that can still lead to unexpected pain, like stepping on a Lego. This simple scenario mirrors the spiritual state of humanity before Christ. The world was engulfed in darkness, with sin blurring our path.

Before Jesus, Israel was religious yet submerged in spiritual darkness and political oppression. They were yearning for a savior while some were too comfortable in their constructed religious systems. The lights were spiritually off, and it was into this darkness that Jesus entered, offering hope and clarity to a confused world.

The Cause and Consequence of Darkness

Humanity's inclination towards darkness is deeply rooted in personal choice. As stated in John 3:19, people loved darkness rather than light because their works were evil. The ruler of this world, Satan, and the providential will of God, at times, further blinds people from truth. However, the light of salvation pierces through with Jesus as our guiding force.

God seeks us even in our rebellion. Romans 1:21 elucidates that the darkness is a result of rejecting God, leading to futile thinking and a hardened heart.

The Arrival of Hope

In the thick of our darkness appeared the light of hope—Jesus. Prophesied in Isaiah, the Messiah came to bring spiritual sight to his people. He was not just a healer of physical blindness but a restorer of spiritual vision. Jesus's arrival brought about the rise of some and the fall of others, challenging those who thought they knew the truth.

The light of Christ opens eyes blinded by pride and self-righteousness. Those who are spiritually aware recognize their need for Him, while those relying on their sufficiency remain shrouded in darkness.

Worship as a Response to Light

When spiritual sight is granted, the natural response is worship. The man once blind worshiped Jesus when his eyes were opened both physically and spiritually. Worship transcends the mere act of singing; it manifests in how we live, fellowship, give, and serve.

Worship is not confined to a specific expression. It is the heartfelt response to the presence of the Savior in our lives. At our church, worship permeates through preaching, giving, praying, and even during trials. Every moment of genuine worship heralds the light of Christ in our existence.

Salvation and Spiritual Sight

Salvation is solely God's initiative. Jesus sought the man cast out by society, just as He seeks each one of us. Without God's intervention, we remain in darkness. Romans 3:10-12 reminds us that none seek after God on their own accord.

When Jesus intervenes, He grants us the wisdom and insight to respond to His call. In acknowledging our blindness, spiritual sight is granted, enabling us to bask in His light.

Living with Humility and Awareness

The believer's life is a journey of continual humility, recognizing our propensity for darkness. We must remain aware of the seeds of sin in our hearts and our dependency on Christ.

Arrogance and self-sufficiency are dangerous, leading to spiritual blindness. Our need for Christ is perpetual, and every moment of clarity or understanding is a testament to His work in us.

The True Meaning of Christmas

At the heart of Christmas is the celebration of light piercing through darkness. The birth of Christ illuminates our lives, offering a path of hope, love, and redemption. It is a time for us, once blind, to see anew and embrace the Savior who came to guide us.

As we delve into the holiday season, let the light of Christ shine brighter than any festive decoration. May it fill our hearts with joy and be the reason for our celebration this year.

Embrace the light and stand firm in the glorious truth that our Savior has come to us, offering a life transformed by grace and truth.
